Mums-to-be warned about contaminated Polish black pudding

Expectant mums have been warned they could be at particular risk from contaminated Polish black puddings that have been recalled from sale.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) yesterday warned that all batches of Sokolow’s home black pudding sausage and grill black pudding sausage are being recalled after they were found to contain high levels of potentially deadly listeria monocytogene.
“Specific segments of the population would be deemed to be of particular risk including pregnant women, elderly people and people with impaired immune functions,” the FSAI warned.
Consumers were urged to check if they had purchased these products and not to eat them if they had, but instead return them.
The affected products are from Poland, where investigations are being carried out to establish how the contamination occurred.
Production has stopped at the factory involved to allow a full clean-up. The products are being removed from sale by the two wholesalers in Ireland that distributed them mainly to ethnic and corner shops, although some were still on sale yesterday afternoon.
However, there have been no reports of illness or death in Ireland as a result of eating these products, and the FSAI said it was not aware if there had been any illness in Poland.
It has contacted Polish media in Ireland to reach the most likely consumers of these black puddings.
The UK authorities have carried out a similar recall there.

What is black pudding
Black pudding or blood pudding is a type of sausage made by cooking blood or dried blood with a filler until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled. It is also called blood sausage.
The blood of slaughtered pigs and cows is mostly used and sometimes also the blood of slaughtered sheep, goats, poultry and horses. Another disgusting product from the meat industry.
